Biography

Alexander came to the throne after the murder of his father Paul I. After defeats at Austerlitz and Friedland he made peace with Napoleon at Tilsit in 1807. When Napoleon invaded in 1812 and took Moscow, Russia refused to negotiate, and the Grande Armee was destroyed in retreat. Alexander rode into Paris in 1814 and shaped the Congress of Vienna and the Holy Alliance. His sudden death in 1825 led to the Decembrist revolt.
