Casimir III the Great
Biography
The last Piast king of Poland, Casimir made peace with the Teutonic Knights and Bohemia and doubled the size of the kingdom by acquiring Red Ruthenia. He codified laws, reformed currency, and built many castles and town walls. In 1364 he founded the University of Krakow, now the Jagiellonian University. He welcomed Jewish refugees from persecution elsewhere in Europe. He left no legitimate son.
