Inherited Spain, Burgundy, Austria, Naples, Americas, elected Emperor. His realm faced Luther at Worms 1521, Suleiman at Vienna, France at every turn, Barbary pirates. Abdicated 1556, split the empire, Spain to Philip, Austria to Ferdinand, retired to monastery Yuste, died 1558. The first global emperor, exhausted by it, clocks he timed his life by at the end.
