Chulalongkorn
Biography
Chulalongkorn abolished slavery in stages, reformed the government into ministries, built railways, and introduced modern schooling. Through skilled diplomacy and territorial concessions to France and Britain, he kept Siam as the only Southeast Asian state never colonized. He traveled to Europe in 1897 and 1907. His death anniversary, 23 October, is a national holiday in Thailand.
