Kamehameha I
Biography
A chief from the island of Hawaii, Kamehameha won control of his home island and then conquered Maui and Oahu, where the Battle of Nuuanu in 1795 was decisive. Kauai submitted peacefully in 1810, completing the unification of the islands into the Kingdom of Hawaii. He used Western ships and weapons and traded sandalwood. His law of the splintered paddle protected civilians. June 11 is celebrated as Kamehameha Day.
