Ranjit Singh
Biography
Ranjit Singh united the Sikh confederacies and took Lahore in 1799, proclaiming himself Maharaja of Punjab in 1801. He built a modern army trained by European officers and expanded into Multan, Kashmir, and Peshawar. He gilded the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, now known as the Golden Temple. He owned the Koh-i-Noor diamond. Within a decade of his death, the British annexed Punjab in 1849.
