Tamar of Georgia
Biography
Tamar was the first woman to rule Georgia in her own right, with the title of king. Her reign marked the height of the medieval Georgian kingdom, which won victories over Seljuk Turk forces and extended its influence across the Caucasus. She helped found the Empire of Trebizond in 1204. Shota Rustaveli dedicated the epic poem The Knight in the Panther Skin to her. She is venerated as a saint.
