James VI of Scotland inherited England 1603, uniting the crowns. Sponsor of the King James Bible 1611, still the most printed book. Divine right theorist, clashed with Parliament over finances and prerogative. Gunpowder Plot 1605 nearly killed him. His son Charles inherited the confrontations that became civil war. Peace with Spain, plantations of Ulster and Virginia, expansion abroad.
