Biography

The last of the five good emperors, Marcus wrote the Meditations in campaign tents on the Danube, private Stoic notes that became a classic. The Antonine Plague, Marcomannic wars, his co emperor Lucius Verus died. He sold palace treasures to fund war rather than tax. His son Commodus broke the adoption succession, the decline Gibbon dated from his death. The philosopher king of actual history.
