Mary I of England
Biography
Daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, Mary overcame the attempt to place Lady Jane Grey on the throne. She restored Roman Catholicism and married Philip II of Spain, a deeply unpopular match. Around three hundred Protestants were burned for heresy, earning her the name Bloody Mary in later Protestant tradition. Calais, the last English possession in France, was lost in 1558. Her half sister Elizabeth succeeded her.
